The 4th Line Theatre is unique in many ways as outlined in the theatre company’s tag line… “Bringing history to life on the outdoor stages of the Winslow Farm.”

4th Line Theatre has been bringing history to life on the barnyard stages of a 5th generation farm in Millbrook Ontario for 27 seasons.  The Theatre was founded in 1992 by Creative Director Robert Winslow. The company continues to be passionate about preserving Canada’s cultural heritage through the development and presentation of historical drama.

The group has developed over 30 plays based on regional history and culture and this season is no different. The first summer production, Crow Hill: The Telephone Play demonstrates the vast technological changes we have witnessed going all the way back to the first telephone service in the local area, opened by the local family doctor. Fifteen-year-old Alice takes on the job of switchboard operator… a decision that dictates the course of her life for the next thirty years. The research for the play includes interviews with local residents.

The second production, Who Killed Snow White? follows a typical 15-year old girl whose life is shattered after an act of violence. It is based in part on interviews with local teens, parents and educators. The story explores social media and cyberbullying and is a powerful commentator on the life of today’s youth. “Playwright Judith Thompson dives deep into the heart of our culture to examine the roots of sexual violence and the culture of toxic masculinity we struggle to understand.”

If you are new to the Bethany area or are interested in exploring the local attractions, you might be surprised to learn where an 18 minute/26 km drive can take you…straight to Jungle Cat World Wildlife Park.

Jungle Cat World Wildlife Park provides a unique opportunity to see and experience wild species, many threatened with extinction, in an up-close and personal environment. Around the world, accredited zoo’s take a leading role to protect and conserve the animals we share our living space with. They offer a unique service to the public by engaging in wildlife education programs and experiences – teaching us to live in an environmentally responsible way.

The programs offered are the perfect strategy to help children, teens and adults experience the animals in ways that you might not even imagine!

Safari Zoo Camp is an experiential education program where participants will get hands on experience. Campers get involved doing a little of everything including watering and feeding the animals, cleaning cages and learning about the animal’s behaviour. Camp also includes outdoor excursions and working on special projects. Campers will be challenged…and exhausted.

Bethany.Ontario.Blog.JungleCatWorld.1

Behind the Scenes and Safari Adventure lets participants meet the animals under the safe supervision of staff. What an experience to meet a young wolf cub or play with a group of long tailed lemurs. The hour-long program is available every day, rain or shine. And there is an education feeding tour every day. Fees include all day admission to the zoo.

And don’t forget your camera and fresh batteries! Just look at the photo opportunities you will have. This is Delilah, the zoo’s Transvaal lion (Panthera leo krugeri). She is not camera-shy!

As the warm weather starts many of us begin thinking of day trips to ensure we get out and enjoy the features and attractions around us. There are museums, farmers markets, arts and craft shows…the list is almost endless.

But have you ever been on the Butter Tart Tour? Yes, you can take The Kawartha’s Northumberland Butter Tart Tour where you will have the opportunity to stop at dozens of locations, all offering the best butter tarts in Ontario. And what is even better, if you don’t get to take the tour this summer, you can visit the vendors 365 days a year!

The idea for the tour started in 2011 and has grown to include over 50 locations.

If you are counting calories, you can skip this paragraph. But if you are due for some sweet treats, then you will accept that a butter tart is pretty basic: butter, sugar, syrup and eggs. And then the additional ingredients are added to appeal to every sweet tooth. Consider raisins, pecans, walnuts, currants… and even cream fillings. Of course, times have changed, and you can even find gluten free versions.

Not sure where to start? Then pick one of the suggested mini tours – with over 50 locations, you have to focus your driving and eating efforts!

Tour #1: “It Gets Butter” is the Sturgeon & Balsam Lake Route, taking you through Lindsay, Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls and Kirkfield.

Tour #2: “We’ll Butter You Up” is the Kawartha Route and will take you through Rice Lake to Peterborough and Stoney Lake.

Tour #3: “A Tart of Gold” is the 401 Route and will take you along Highway 401 to Port Hope, Cobourg, Grafton and Warkworth.

Tour #4: “A Change of Tart” is the Northumberland East route and will take you along country roads in Port Hope, Cobourg, Grafton, Warkworth and Campbellford.

The following map shows the complete picture of the locations of the bakers and vendors.

  • Best Plain Butter Tart
  • Best Canadian Collection Butter Tart
  • Best Gluten Free Butter Tart
  • Best Emerging Baker
  • Best of the Best

You can see the 2017 winners at http://buttertarttour.ca/

Valentines-The-Ranch-2018-e1516393922105

Treat your sweetie to an early St Valentine’s evening of dinner, music and dancing with the Russell de Carle Trio at The Ranch Resort , Saturday February 10th.

As lead vocalist and bassist of iconic Canadian country roots band Prairie Oyster, Russell de Carle is no stranger to awards and accolades.

The 2008 CCMA Hall of Honour inductees have racked up an impressive list of JUNO and Canadian Country Music Awards, gold and platinum selling records and number one singles.

As a songwriter, Russell has also received two SOCAN Song of the Year Awards.

The Russell de Carle represents a new beginning, and it’s a natural extension of Russell’s talents as both a songwriter and interpreter of song.

Held together by equal measures of heartbreak and hope, and featuring performances from some of Canada’s most accomplished instrumentalists, the Russell de Carle music uniquely blends blues, jazz and R&B with a country swing.

We’re thrilled to have such incredible talent on stage warming up a chilly February evening and infusing the room with romantic ballads and toe-tapping two step dance tunes.

Tickets for the February 10th dinner and show are on sale now for $55 per person or $100 per couple.

To order tickets or for more information please contact The Ranch Resort at 705-277-1942  or email us at info@theranchresort.ca
