KidSport
Did you know that 1 in 3 Ontario families cannot afford to register their children in a sports program? Over 300,000 Ontario children under the age of 14 live in low income families. A not for profit group called KidSport has distributed over $3 Million in grants since 2000 to over 16,500 boys and girls. If you know a child who wants to play softball but cannot afford the fees, KidSport is there to help.
KidSport believes that no child should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports. Visit the website and find out how to apply at http://www.kidsportcanada.ca/ontario/.

Bethany Park is a happening spot! And you will want to be sure to free up your schedule on August 15th to take part in the Bethany Park Antique / Garden Tractor Show and Pull.
This will be an exciting – and unique – day for the family. Consider watching the Tractor Pull at 11 am followed by the Antique Tractor Slow Barrel Roll Race at 1:00 p.m.
You won’t go hungry either! Breakfast includes sandwiches, pancakes, bacon and coffee for $5 followed by Marshall Mac’s Unique BBQ served from 11 am to 4 p.m.
Bouncy Castles, Kidz Karnival, games and prizes run from 10 am to 4 pm.
And for the adults, the Beer Gardens open at 11:00 until 1:00 am.
An adult dance complete with DJ starts at 8:00 p.m. to finish off the fun.
The Bethany Park is run by the Bethany Athletic Society and has been serving the community for over 100 years. The Society is a not-for-profit corporation, run by a volunteer board of directors. In fact, if you have time on August 15th, you can always lend a hand for a few hours.
Volunteers, Sponsors, Community and Board members make every event a success.
The Bethany Athletic Society is working hard to continue the traditions that started over 100 years ago. Over the last few years the Board of Directors and community members have put an effort into expanding the parks services to including new softball clinics, first aid clinics and new fund raising events to help make improvements to the park as a whole.
Future plans include replacing the current playground with a modern play structure and a new combination skateboard / bike park for summer use, and a skating rink in the winter. The softball committee is working hard to bring in a new surface for the softball diamond to improve drainage and safety.
Finally, the volunteers are working towards general park improvements such as new lights for the grounds and a retaining wall for the parking lot.
Join the local community on August 15th and help support the Bethany Athletic Society.

Kick-off your summer at the Bethany Park Annual Fair this Victoria Day Long Weekend. Located at 1 Wilson Street in Bethany, the Long Weekend event is hosted by the Bethany Athletic Society, a non-profit organization, whose focus is putting on sporting and community events in the beloved 107 year old park.
The Athletic Society’s mission is “providing Bethany and surrounding communities with family fun for all ages, by supporting sporting activities, active living and community events.” One look at the upcoming festivities will have you saying, “mission accomplished!”
All of their usual events are here, plus a return to Classic Community Fun! They have rented 3 inflatables and have a selection of classic carnival games with prizes for all. Face It! Face Painting is back Friday evening, as is Razberry the Clown who will have her booth set up to make awesome balloon creations for the kids. They will also have a selection of carnival games with prizes for everyone.
If you’re into cars the Annual Show & Shine is revving up to have the park full of beautiful classic cars again this year.
And it’s already time for those interested to think about getting your pets ready for the Pet Show on Sunday, and floats ready for Monday’s Parade.
Things get kicked off at 5pm on Friday, May 15th with a Family BBQ, live band, a Beer Garden for the adults, and fireworks at dusk!
On Saturday, May 16th the fun continues with a softball tournament running from 8am-5pm, the family BBQ and Beer Garden beginning at 11am, and an Adult DJ Dance Party that starts at 8pm.
On Sunday, May 17th the 25th Annual Show & Shine Car Show takes place, as well as a Pet Show from 12:30-1:30pm. And of course the Family BBQ and Beer Garden are back from 11am-5pm – but if you’re looking to start your fun a little earlier – Sunday features a pancake breakfast from 8am to noon.
To wrap things up on Monday, May 18th registration for the Bethany Parade begins at 10am and the Parade gets under way at 1pm. There’s also the 29th Annual Pie & Cake Competition and a performance by the Port Hope Pipe Band. And before you ask, yes, the Family BBQ and Beer Garden are back from 11am-5pm.
Every day there will also be two bouncy castles with free admission set up for the kids and fun community-built skill testing games for all ages!
To top it all off it’s all for a great cause. A collection bin for the Daily Bread Food Bank will be set up all weekend long in the pavilion to accept non-perishable food donations and family care supplies for local families. All donations will be delivered at the end of the weekend to the Bethany United Church to be made available to local residents. All proceeds from this event go to help support the on-going maintenance and youth sports offerings at the Bethany Park. As always, all donations are welcome, and appreciated!

The Annual Victoria Day Celebration in Bethany
(reposted from Bethany Park website)
What a fantastic weekend
We’d like to thank everyone for yet another great Victoria Day Celebration! Thanks to the community members for your understanding regarding the Midway, and for coming out and enjoying the weekend. We enjoyed some absolutely beautiful weather and it looked like everyone had a lot of fun! Bob Figsby from the Bethany Division of the Fire Department put on such a wonderful fireworks show this weekend! We heard nothing but rave reviews and excitement about the fireworks, thanks for another great show Bob!
A definite thanks to all of our generous sponsors and supporters for helping the BAS put on this celebration, your contributions were much enjoyed by the community. All of the prizes for the pet show and contest, car show, parade and pie & cake contest were much appreciated by all recipients! Without the generous support of all of our sponsors we would not have so many happy winners!
Another heart-felt thank you to all the BAS members, both past and present, and our kind community volunteers for all their hard work this past weekend. Throughout the weekend many people stepped up and helped out in so many ways that we can’t thank you all enough! Even though there were some long days, everyone did a wonderful job making sure our community had a great weekend.
Anyone having photos that they would like to see up on the website gallery, please e-mail them toehubar@silvergateway.com and we will make sure to get them up for everyone to see!
Cheers for a great start to the summer, and we’re all looking forward to many more to come!
