If you are new to the Bethany area or are interested in exploring the local attractions, you might be surprised to learn where an 18 minute/26 km drive can take you…straight to Jungle Cat World Wildlife Park.

Jungle Cat World Wildlife Park provides a unique opportunity to see and experience wild species, many threatened with extinction, in an up-close and personal environment. Around the world, accredited zoo’s take a leading role to protect and conserve the animals we share our living space with. They offer a unique service to the public by engaging in wildlife education programs and experiences – teaching us to live in an environmentally responsible way.

The programs offered are the perfect strategy to help children, teens and adults experience the animals in ways that you might not even imagine!

Safari Zoo Camp is an experiential education program where participants will get hands on experience. Campers get involved doing a little of everything including watering and feeding the animals, cleaning cages and learning about the animal’s behaviour. Camp also includes outdoor excursions and working on special projects. Campers will be challenged…and exhausted.

Behind the Scenes and Safari Adventure lets participants meet the animals under the safe supervision of staff. What an experience to meet a young wolf cub or play with a group of long tailed lemurs. The hour-long program is available every day, rain or shine. And there is an education feeding tour every day. Fees include all day admission to the zoo.

Camping With Your Horse Near Bethany Ontario!

Finally, summer has arrived and the kids are out of school. If you are wondering what do both during the week and on the weekends there is one perfect option: Sandaraska Park.

Before we describe the typical attractions you will find at Sandaraska, let’s look at a truly unique option – camping with your horse! Yes, you read that correctly.

Sandaraska Park offers a camping experience for horse owners. Book a camping site and have access to almost 11,000 acres of forest with hundreds of kilometers of trail within the Ganaraska Forest. Memberships and day passes are available. Be sure to make reservations though to secure your site with hydro, water and a horse pen. And all sizes of horse trailers can be accommodated!

Don’t own a horse? No problem, because with 200 acres in the park itself, there is more than enough to do for families.

Why not go camping? Choose from the 219 large shady or open campsites. Pick daily, weekly or seasonal sites with close access to clean washrooms, hot showers, flush toilets and even a new laundry facility.

The kids can still run off energy playing in the two playgrounds, playhouse or swimming in the heated salt water pool. They can participate in events and activities organized for all ages. Or play basketball, horseshoes or go hiking.

In the evening consider sitting around the fire pits, roasting marshmallows or telling tall tales.

Saddlewood Equestrian Camp – Horsing Around in Bethany Ontario!

It may just be the end of January but registration is already open for Saddlewood’s 2015 Summer Camp. Saddlewood is located 3KM north of Bethany Ontario.

If you have a daughter between the ages of 6 and 18, and she has attended the Equestrian Camp before, than chances are you know you want to register early.

The exceptional riding program has been operating for over 40 years by Janis and Jim Smith. They opened Saddlewood with eight horses – the horses now number over 120.

Saddlewood is a wonderful story of passion and commitment. It was started from a family hobby in 1968. Janis was looking for something for both her and her horses to do in the summer and as a teacher, she was keen to bring her love of horses to the local children.  They opened with just a few horses and today have grown into a full-scale summer camp with over 120 horses, attracting campers from all over Canada, the United States and other parts of the world.

The sense of family is still strong. Janis and Jim’s daughters, both full time teachers, still come to help out during the summertime. There is a feeling of family throughout the camp. Most of the counselors and senior staff have been campers – and the kitchen staff bakes as good as any mom!

The physical premises include 3 outdoor jumping rings, 3 cross country courses, chalet style residences for the campers, a dining hall and a 4,000 square foot activity center – all on hundreds of acres of beautiful land.

It is rare to find a family run business that has maintained their roots for over 40 years – but Saddlewood Equestrian Camp continues to live up to its history and reputation.
