Make Plans to Enjoy Winter in the Kawarthas

Sometimes you have to sit down and make actual plans to get outside and have some winter fun. Although tempting to enjoy your cozy home and a cup of hot chocolate, some winter exercise will cure any potential winter blues.

Thanks to the City of Peterborough and the Trent Severn Waterway, free public skating is available below the Peterborough Life Lock – weather permitting of course! The City floods the ice when needed to ensure it is as smooth as possible. Skate with your family or join in a game of hockey with your friends. Just be sure to check the flag that indicates the current ice conditions. 

You can also check out the Kawartha NOW website to find out which rinks and arenas are offering public skating.

Why not go where you can find some of the finest snow conditions and longest ski seasons in Ontario. Enjoy 14 runs including the East & West Glades and 2 terrain parks on 90 skiable acres.  You will find everything you need whether you are a skier or a snowboarder, from novice to expert.

You don’t have to wait for a special day or event to enjoy the fun and exercise of cross country skiing in the Kawartha Lakes.

The Devil’s Elbow Ski area near Bethany offers 8.5 kilometers of Nordic skiing trails. This is truly winter at its finest. The winding trails will take you through sheltered evergreen and hardwood forests. Or enjoy the glide and scenery along the beautiful trails in some of Ontario’s finest conservation areas including trails through the Somerville Forest Tract, the Ken Reid Conservation Area, the Emily Forest Tract, the Ganaraska Trail and the Fleetwood Creek Conservation area.

Or enjoy the skiing through a network of maintained trails at The Gaming Nature Centre where you can explore various ecosystems and wildlife habitat.

Ice Skating

How about dusting off the ice skates and visiting the local arena. Public skating is available at the Manvers Community Centre in Bethany.

Take the whole family Sundays between 12:30 and 2:00 or Tuesdays between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. Or you have little children, you can go Wednesday mornings between 10:30 and 12 noon for the Parents and Tots Skate.

The Kawartha Ski and Snowboard School can get you started no matter what your age or skiing/snowboarding level.

The staff are certified by the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance and can provide the right instruction no matter what level you are at: a newbie, an intermediate skier, or an experienced skier who has reached a plateau. Too shy for the small group lessons? Then consider a few private lessons to get your started.

Check out the website to get all of the details on programs starting at Kinder Ski to learning to ski in a weekend. There are also ski camps for every special holiday – all the way to March Break and Easter.

Some people prefer snowboarding. But don’t be fooled into thinking it is so simple you can do without a lesson or two. A qualified snowboard instructor will teach you to ride safely without the trial and error of trying to learn on your own. Learn to snowboard in a group, at a camp, on the weekend, or with a private lesson.

As the end of February approaches there is still plenty of time left to get out and enjoy one of the benefits of the winter we are having – the snow!

Bethany is home to one of the finest winter attractions of the Kawarthas – Devil’s Elbow Ski Area, which is just a short drive from Peterborough, Lindsay, Port Hope, Oshawa, and Toronto.

Open through March, it offers an excellent March Break destination for families looking to get out. Devil’s Elbow Ski Area

The trees around Bethany Ontario are looking bare and snow has already been sighted.  The wind has a familiar bite and it’s time for many to start thinking about ski season!!!

Those in Bethany know all about one of the great winter attractions of the Kawarthas – Devil’s Elbow Ski Area. Tucked away in the rolling hills of Manvers Township, it is minutes away from Peterborough, Lindsay, Port Hope and Oshawa and just up the road from Bethany Village.

There is something for everyone at the Elbow, from novice to expert,

skiers and snowboarders alike. And this year, there are an additional 2 terrain areas to enjoy. Lineups aren’t an issue with 6 chairlifts and 8.5 km of trails winding through forests for the Nordic skiers.

Open to the public every day, except Christmas Day, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., December – March.  This might make me unpopular with the non-skiers, but I really hope there’s more snow than last year!

Last weekend was the Annual Open House at Devil’s Elbow Ski Area.  It was a reunion of sorts, with great opportunities to take advantage of pre-season discounts to buy a season pass, register for lessons and racing programs – Alpine, snowboarding and junior racing- and meet the ski patrol.

And many enjoyed Parnell’s Ski Swap and Sale!  Skiis could get tuned up and it was great chance to meet up with old friends.  The concession stand was open and ready for business and the kids got some pre-ski season exercise running up and down the hills. It was a fun weekend with everyone preparing for the upcoming season!
