We’ve talked about the 4th Line Theatre in the past. They have been presenting first class theatre locally for 28 years. Bringing history to life on the stage, the theatre is set on a farm in Millbrook between Peterborough and Port Hope. Thousands of visitors have experienced unforgettable plays while enjoying picnics, local birds and sunsets.

You have two excellent choices right now. You can see the latest production, “The Other: A Strange Christmas Tale” in December or you can purchase 2019 gift certificates for yourself or as a gift this holiday season.

“A mysterious woman arrives in Millbrook on the night of the Christmas pageant. Who is she and where has she come from? A girl and her grandfather search the streets of Millbrook to find out, with audience members following them closely.”

“The Other: A Strange Christmas Tale” will be presented at the St. Thomas Anglican Church. Written by Beverley Cooper and Directed by Kim Blackwell the play will run December 5 at 7:00 PM, December 7, 8 at 7:00 PM and December 12, 13, 14 at 7:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased online at:

https://secure1.tixhub.com/4thlinetheatre/online/index.asp.

Your second option is to purchase tickets for yourself or as a gift – for the 2019 season. “Bloom: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Fable” and “Carmel” will be featured.

“Loosely based on the story of The Band, Beau Dixon’s “Bloom: A Rock ’n’ Roll Fable” follows the lives of two small-town best friends from Assumption, Ontario, who share a lifelong love affair with rock ’n’ roll music.

Carmel is the third in the Barnardo children series of plays (Doctor Barnadro’s Children, 2005 & 2014; Wounded Soldiers, 2014) and will feature characters you already met and fell in love with. This play is filled with music, dancing and farm families trying to get on with the job of living their lives.”

The 4th Line Theatre is unique in many ways as outlined in the theatre company’s tag line… “Bringing history to life on the outdoor stages of the Winslow Farm.”

4th Line Theatre has been bringing history to life on the barnyard stages of a 5th generation farm in Millbrook Ontario for 27 seasons.  The Theatre was founded in 1992 by Creative Director Robert Winslow. The company continues to be passionate about preserving Canada’s cultural heritage through the development and presentation of historical drama.

The group has developed over 30 plays based on regional history and culture and this season is no different. The first summer production, Crow Hill: The Telephone Play demonstrates the vast technological changes we have witnessed going all the way back to the first telephone service in the local area, opened by the local family doctor. Fifteen-year-old Alice takes on the job of switchboard operator… a decision that dictates the course of her life for the next thirty years. The research for the play includes interviews with local residents.

The second production, Who Killed Snow White? follows a typical 15-year old girl whose life is shattered after an act of violence. It is based in part on interviews with local teens, parents and educators. The story explores social media and cyberbullying and is a powerful commentator on the life of today’s youth. “Playwright Judith Thompson dives deep into the heart of our culture to examine the roots of sexual violence and the culture of toxic masculinity we struggle to understand.”

If you are looking forward to your own home garden, you can buy vegetable and flower seedlings to get you started.

This years’ opening day for the Market is also Earth Day. To help celebrate, there will be a ‘local seed swap’. Just bring any extra seeds you have in envelopes that have been labelled – and trade them for something new to try in your own garden.

At this time of year, we often yearn for the colours of spring. Snow, rain and the general greyness of March provides the perfect time to daydream of colour. And that daydream can lead you to a special event called Blocks & Blooms.

Visualize the combination of colorful gardens in bloom and the beauty of handmade quilts… all adorning the front porches of heritage properties. This one-day event gives local residents and visitors the chance to see the private gardens plus the colourful landscape of quilts as they showcase some of Millbrook’s architectural treasures.

The day long event is a partnership between the Millbrook & Cavan Historical Society, The Millbrook Needlers’ Quilt Guild and the Downtown BIA. In fact, there has been months of work to enlist the participation of gardeners and property owners. Blocks & Blooms will be a featured topic at the BIA Breakfast on March 28th at the Millbrook Legion.

Mark Saturday, June 23, 10 am-4pm on your calendar. This will be a special fundraiser for the Historical Society with tickets going on sale in May.

Yes it’s that time of year again and the stars have certainly aligned for school aged children. Friday June 9th is a PA day which has given the Fair organizers the chance for an extra day of fun and activities. The Millbrook Fair will actually open on Thursday, June 8th at 9:30 am for students in grades 1 through 3. They will have the opportunity to visit a number of activity stations, supporting their early learning of all things agricultural.

Others can get a head start at 3:00 pm when general admission opens. The early birds will be ready for the midway to open at 4:00.

Bethany.Ontario.Blog.Agricultural.Fair

The 4 x 4 Challenge is hosted by the Kawartha Lakes Jeep Owners Club. Competition includes the Small Mud Pit, Big Mud Pit, Super Modified Challenge for Jeeps with tires 50 inches and over, and of course a Rock Crawl.

The Ambassador Competition was designed for youth to show their leadership skills in supporting the community. Contestants have to complete a private interview, give a 2-5 minute speech on a selected topic, and answer an impromptu question. The ambassador will be present the weekend of the fair, attend the O.A.A.S Convention in Toronto in February at the Royal York and possibly represent Millbrook Fair at the C.N.E.  Ambassador Competition the following year in August. And a $500 scholarship will be presented to the winner.

No Fair is complete without an Antique Tractor Show and Pull, Demolition Derby, and Truck and Tractor Pulls. Antique Tractors will compete in a variety of weight classes ranging from 2700 pounds to over 6500 pounds. The Truck and Tractor Pulls will include Local Gas 4 x 4 Trucks, Circuit Vintage Tractors, and Diesel 4 x 4 Trucks, including weights from 5500 pounds to 8500 pounds.

Parents can enjoy award winning singer and songwriter Dean James in the Beer Barn.

Saturday starts off with a bang! The Ontario Xtreme Cowboy Event at 9 am will feature contestants who will work through a series of trail and farm based obstacles on their horses – showcasing both skill and speed.  Sunday activities include the Rabbit Show, Baking Competition Auction, Tough Truck Competition and the Demolition Derby.

There is so much to see and do for the whole family. Get all the times and days from the Millbrook Fair paper or at the Fair Website at www.MillbrookFair.ca.

See you there!
