February 17th – Enjoy Family Fishing Day and More!

February 17th is a perfect family fun day. Start off at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) Family Ice Fishing Event and end the day at the Hunting & Fishing Heritage Centre.

The 9th Annual Family Ice Fishing Day is your opportunity to try your hand at ice fishing without needing a license. It is a free event, all equipment and bait is provided and there is a prize for every child!

All the fun takes place on Chemong Lake in Bel Rotary Park. Dress warmly; pack a lunch and some snacks. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your toboggan to enjoy the hills after fishing.

Ontario Family Fishing Events offer an opportunity for families to fish Ontario waters without the usual paperwork. The Ontario Government designates two periods throughout the year as license-free ­– the Family Day Weekend in February and a full nine days in July that coincides with National Fishing Week.

After Ice fishing, or if ice fishing is not for you, be sure to visit the OFAH Hunting and Fishing Heritage Centre in Peterborough.

Activities for the whole family will include:

SnowCross Snowmobile Racing is Coming Back to Lindsay

February 17 to the 18th, 2018, you can witness the thrill of this exciting sport thanks to the Canadian Snowcross Racing Association (CSRA).

CSRA was created in 1994 to oversee, organize, promote and regulate snowmobile competitions in Canada, primarily within Ontario and Quebec.

Race fans include the young and old – all enthusiasts for the rapidly expanding sport of professional snowmobile racing.

Snowcross is actually the most popular form of snowmobile racing. Imagine high-flying aerial displays in addition to all of the activity on the compact race track. The race tracks feature tight turns and banked corners – designed for the fast pace of the race.

Lindsay is one of the key Powersports markets on the Snowcross race circuit. The series attracts hundreds of racers and thousands of spectators at each event – over 50,000 spectators for the season.

CSRA racers, spectators and recreational snowmobile users love the great outdoors and the excitement of the race. In fact, loving winter is a must!  The season started January 13th in Quebec. The first day of races included rain; by the second day the temperature was -20*C; the next day it was down to -38 C with the windchill. But the race went on!

Snowshoe at Victoria Rail Trail

Chances are you know someone who has been skating, skiing or snowmobiling lately, but how about snowshoeing.

Bethany is close to the Victoria Recreation Corridor – a 55 km trail, stretching from Lindsay to Kinmount. The trail is used year-round for over a dozen types of sport – including trails perfect for snow shoeing. Maybe this winter is the time to try something new.

The trail follows the former CN rail line and will take you from Lindsay along Sturgeon Lake to Fenelon Falls and onto Kinmount.

Snowshoeing has been gaining in popularity in Ontario. Consider the benefits:

  • Minimal equipment
  • Easy to learn
  • Fun for the whole family
  • Provides an incredible physical workout

In fact, you can burn more calories snowshoeing than you can walking, running or cross country skiing at the same pace. It provides a cardio workout while also building strength, agility, balance and endurance.

You can walk over the deepest snow, making it easier to get around on any trail. The snowshoes distribute your weight, leaving you with an experience of floating on the snow. While some people are content to walk on their snowshoes, there are others who sprint up hills for that bit of extra exercise.

Canada’s first snowshoes varied in shape, size and materials depending upon the choice of trees and animals available. Many were carved from birch or hard ash. Today most snowshoes are made of lightweight aluminum frames with steal cleats.

In the Bethany area you can access the trail through access points in the South Corridor and Central Corridor.

The South Corridor is the old CP Rail line that extends 30 km from Lindsay to Bethany. The recommended access points:

  • Bethany at the intersection of Ski Hill Road and Jackson Street
  • Pigeon River (limited parking) at Mount Horeb Road (Arterial Road 31)
  • Lindsay off of King Street

The Central Corridor begins in the north end of Lindsay at Thunder Bridge Road and takes you north to Fenelon Falls. The recommended access points:

  • Lindsay (Non-motorized), William Street North – Victoria Junction between Eglington Avenue and Orchard Park Road
  • Lindsay (Motorized) at Thunder Bridge Road, Ken Reid Conservation Area
  • Cameron on Long Beach Rd. (Arterial Road 34) East of Highway 35
  • Fenelon Falls (South) at the Old Railway Station

And the timing is perfect! You can take part in the second annual Snowshoe Kawartha races…5k or 10K.

Family Days at The Canadian Canoe Museum

Family Drop-In Activities take place the last Saturday of every month at The Canadian Canoe Museum.  And on Saturday, January 27th you can stay one step ahead of winter by making a hand warmer sachet. The size of the palm of your hands, a hand warmer can take the chill off while you are enjoying the winter outdoors. You’ll have a variety of choices including a hand warmer owl or canoe.

  • Dress-up is for the whole family. Everyone can try on woolen Hudson Bay Company capotes, mittens and booties and try weaving a snowshoe, or learn to finger weave the iconic Voyageur belt, the ceinture flechee.
  • Experience a modern day canoe (on industrial springs) that kids can get into to rock and roll their way through the whitewater. The canoe is even equipped with paddles.
  • Relax and read in the reading nook with canoe and nature-themed children’s books.
  • Experience the fur trade with real beaver pelts to encourage kids to contemplate how this country depended on the beaver fur trade.
  • Sit in a birch bark winter wigwam and gather around the faux fire, listening to a recorded story being told by a Mi’kmaq elder.

Super Heroes Will Take the Plunge!

In all of the comic books you may have read years ago, or all of the super heroes movies you have seen, have you ever watched Superman, Batman, Spiderman and SuperWoman take a chilly plunge in a polar bear dip? Chances are the answer is no.

Well this year you can either witness this special event… or be in costume yourself. The Rotary Club of Bridgenorth-Ennismore-Lakefield sponsors the Rotary Polar Plunge which will take plance February 4th between 2 and 3 pm. All Super Heroes Welcome!

The BEL Rotary Club’s goal is to raise $15,000. Each participant is required to  have at least $200 in pledges in order to take the plunge. Both your own charity of choice and Rotary’s charities will benefit from your efforts. 50% of the funds you raise will be allocated to your favourite cause; 50% of the funds will go to the Rotary Club’s many projects.

Registration is easy. Registration information, on-line registration forms and pledge sheets are available on the Polar Plunge site page https://www.easypledge.ca/bel-rotary/.

On-site registration and check-in begin at 12:00 noon, on the west side of the Bridgenorth Ennismore Causeway.  All plungers under the age of 16 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.  The action begins at 2:00 p.m. sharp so don’t be late!

The BEL Rotary Club is a “service club with approximately 20 members, who actively work in the local and international community to better the lives of people and our environment.”

One of the  charities that Rotary partners with is called Shelter Box. It is supported by members who believe shelter is a basic human right – shelter from chaos of disaster and conflict is vital.

“ShelterBox is an international relief charity  that provides immediate assistance to people affected by disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, flooding, hurricanes, cyclones, tsunamis, or conflict. With 18 international affiliates, ShelterBox provides shelter, lifesaving equipment, and educational materials to hard-hit communities worldwide. Since its founding in 2000, ShelterBox has responded to more than 200 natural disasters and humanitarian crises in almost 90 countries, providing vital aid for well over 1 million people.”

The BEL Rotary Club meets on Monday nights at 6:30 PM at the Chemong Lodge, 764 Hunter Street, Bridgenorth, ON  K0L1H0.

Help Rotary support such international projects like Shelter Box and many local projects by taking the plunge on February 4th.

Make Plans to Enjoy Snofest 2018!

Chances are you have been at least once to the annual Peterborough Snofest. But did you know the history?

Snofest goes all the way back to 1976 when the province of Ontario had a big push on to encourage everyone to get more active – the promotion was called ParticipACTION!

ParticipACTION came to Peterborough to support a pilot project to help get people more active in the wintertime. And the first Peterborough Snofest was created!  The Festival started off as a one day Carnival and has now evolved into a whole month of events.

Omemee Library Branch Grand Opening

Everyone is invited to celebrate the new Omemee Library Branch Grand Opening– Kawartha Lakes Public Library

KAWARTHA LAKES— The Kawartha Lakes Public Library invites everyone to celebrate the official opening of the expanded and renovated Omemee Branch of Kawartha Lakes Public Library on Saturday January 13, 2018, between 12:00pm and 2:00pm. The formal speeches and ribbon-cutting ceremony will occur at 1:00pm.

Replacing the former Omemee Branch, the new branch is located at 24 King Street East, in the former Ace Hardware store. The new branch has been open to the public since November 2017. The Grand Opening will feature entertainment for children, music and prize draws for children and adults. Treats and refreshments will be available.

“Libraries play an important role in our communities, acting as the community’s living room. I am very excited and proud to have been part of this project. Everyone has worked very hard to complete this project,” said Jamie Morris, Chair of the Kawartha Lakes Public Library Board.

The Omemee Branch Library was designed to suit the needs of the community. The branch has high ceilings and is filled with natural light. It contains areas for comfortable seating, small meetings or just talking with friends. The space was designed to be flexible and inviting, with free Wi-Fi (coming early 2018) and computer stations available, as well as childrens, young adult, and adult collections filled with books and DVDs. The Library expansion includes many barrier-free features such as an automatic door opener and an accessible washroom.

 “Libraries are important partners in ensuring the growth of healthy communities. Our libraries encourage learning for all ages,” added Jamie Anderson, CEO/Library Director.

Make Plans to Enjoy Winter in the Kawarthas

Sometimes you have to sit down and make actual plans to get outside and have some winter fun. Although tempting to enjoy your cozy home and a cup of hot chocolate, some winter exercise will cure any potential winter blues.

You can skate on the Lift Lock Canal

Thanks to the City of Peterborough and the Trent Severn Waterway, free public skating is available below the Peterborough Life Lock – weather permitting of course! The City floods the ice when needed to ensure it is as smooth as possible. Skate with your family or join in a game of hockey with your friends. Just be sure to check the flag that indicates the current ice conditions.

Feel like Singing? Shout Sister Peterborough is Welcoming New Members!

Love to sing but not sure you are ‘good enough’? Well, Shout Sister thinks you are! In fact, you can join the Shout Sister choir even if you can’t read music and have no musical training.

The new Peterborough Director, Kim Doolittle, is an accomplished singer/songwriter. She will direct you and the other members in a fun and unorthodox approach to choral singing. Learn everything you need to know to sing with the choir by studying recorded tracks of music including music from pop and Motown, to folk, to a touch of country and blues.

Everyone from those with no singing experience to others who have sung for years enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. After all, singing is a powerful activity that makes you simply feel good.

The first Shout Sister choir was started by Georgette Fry in Kingston in 2002. She opened chapters in Brockville and Picton in 2006. There are now 24 Chapters in Ontario under the direction of 13 Directors.

Georgette’s efforts were rewarded this past year when she was chosen to be a recipient of the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Medal – Civil Division. The award recognizes Canadians for a “deed or an activity that has been performed in a highly professional manner, or according to a very high standard: often innovative, this deed or activity sets an example for others to follow, improves the quality of life of a community and brings benefit or honour to Canada.”

You can join the ranks of the Shout Sister members to ensure Georgette’s efforts continue – and to have fun! Director Kim Doolittle is accepting new members and would love to meet you on December 18th in Peterborough.
