February 17th – Enjoy Family Fishing Day and More!

February 17th is a perfect family fun day. Start off at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) Family Ice Fishing Event and end the day at the Hunting & Fishing Heritage Centre.

The 9th Annual Family Ice Fishing Day is your opportunity to try your hand at ice fishing without needing a license. It is a free event, all equipment and bait is provided and there is a prize for every child!

All the fun takes place on Chemong Lake in Bel Rotary Park. Dress warmly; pack a lunch and some snacks. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your toboggan to enjoy the hills after fishing.

Ontario Family Fishing Events offer an opportunity for families to fish Ontario waters without the usual paperwork. The Ontario Government designates two periods throughout the year as license-free ­– the Family Day Weekend in February and a full nine days in July that coincides with National Fishing Week.

What a great way to introduce your family to fishing. Plan to attend on February 17th or watch for other fishing festivals, clinics, derbies and workshops hosted across the province throughout the year. To find an event near you, visit  www.ontariofamilyfishing.com.

After Ice fishing, or if ice fishing is not for you, be sure to visit the OFAH Hunting and Fishing Heritage Centre in Peterborough.

Activities for the whole family will include:

  • Excalibur Archery Range
  • Stoeger Airgun Range
  • Lure making, 2D fly tying and casting challenge
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Crafts and games
  • Unique wildlife displays
  • Movie in the amphitheater
  • Fish feeding frenzy in the giant fish aquarium.

Family Days at The Canadian Canoe Museum

Family Drop-In Activities take place the last Saturday of every month at The Canadian Canoe Museum.  And on Saturday, January 27th you can stay one step ahead of winter by making a hand warmer sachet. The size of the palm of your hands, a hand warmer can take the chill off while you are enjoying the winter outdoors. You’ll have a variety of choices including a hand warmer owl or canoe.

  • Kids can also try a true to life 90lb canoe pack or pick up a paddle and try to paddle 50-60 strokes per minute just like the voyageurs.
  • Dress-up is for the whole family. Everyone can try on woolen Hudson Bay Company capotes, mittens and booties and try weaving a snowshoe, or learn to finger weave the iconic Voyageur belt, the ceinture flechee.
  • Experience a modern day canoe (on industrial springs) that kids can get into to rock and roll their way through the whitewater. The canoe is even equipped with paddles.
  • Relax and read in the reading nook with canoe and nature-themed children’s books.
  • Experience the fur trade with real beaver pelts to encourage kids to contemplate how this country depended on the beaver fur trade.
  • Sit in a birch bark winter wigwam and gather around the faux fire, listening to a recorded story being told by a Mi’kmaq elder.

Make Plans to Enjoy Snofest 2018!

Chances are you have been at least once to the annual Peterborough Snofest. But did you know the history?

Snofest goes all the way back to 1976 when the province of Ontario had a big push on to encourage everyone to get more active – the promotion was called ParticipACTION!

ParticipACTION came to Peterborough to support a pilot project to help get people more active in the wintertime. And the first Peterborough Snofest was created!  The Festival started off as a one day Carnival and has now evolved into a whole month of events.

With a full tummy you can head over to the Amazing Race Youth, followed by a Spaghetti Supper!

Feel like Singing? Shout Sister Peterborough is Welcoming New Members!

Love to sing but not sure you are ‘good enough’? Well, Shout Sister thinks you are! In fact, you can join the Shout Sister choir even if you can’t read music and have no musical training.

The new Peterborough Director, Kim Doolittle, is an accomplished singer/songwriter. She will direct you and the other members in a fun and unorthodox approach to choral singing. Learn everything you need to know to sing with the choir by studying recorded tracks of music including music from pop and Motown, to folk, to a touch of country and blues.

Everyone from those with no singing experience to others who have sung for years enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. After all, singing is a powerful activity that makes you simply feel good.

The first Shout Sister choir was started by Georgette Fry in Kingston in 2002. She opened chapters in Brockville and Picton in 2006. There are now 24 Chapters in Ontario under the direction of 13 Directors.

Georgette’s efforts were rewarded this past year when she was chosen to be a recipient of the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Medal – Civil Division. The award recognizes Canadians for a “deed or an activity that has been performed in a highly professional manner, or according to a very high standard: often innovative, this deed or activity sets an example for others to follow, improves the quality of life of a community and brings benefit or honour to Canada.”

You can join the ranks of the Shout Sister members to ensure Georgette’s efforts continue – and to have fun! Director Kim Doolittle is accepting new members and would love to meet you on December 18th in Peterborough.

If the 18th does not work for you, you are welcome to attend another practice with no obligation at any time. Joining Shout Sister could be the perfect Christmas gift to yourself!

How Are You Celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary?

There is no shortage of special events and activities taking place on July 1st to help you celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary. Pick a location anywhere in the Kawarthas and you can be guaranteed to find lots of red and white!

Why not go to the Ranch Resort at 252 Ski Hill Road in Bethany? From July 1 to July 3 you can enjoy the Canada Day Tag Sale and Music Festival featuring local artisans, vendors, antique furniture, hanging art work, country bands, singers and more from 1 to 4 p.m.

Or if you venture a little further from home, why not attend the Multicultural Canada Day Festival at the New Canadians Centre in Peterborough? From 10 am to 3:30 pm you can enjoy International food and craft vendors, stage performers, and even demonstrations on a variety of sports from different cultures. The parade begins at 12 noon down George Street from Murray Street to Morrow Park. Children can enter the Bicycle Contest and ride their decorated bikes in the parade – but don’t let them forget their helmet!

Plan on Attending the 30th Anniversary of the Peterborough Greenwing Fishing Derby

Want to get the kids or grand kids interested in a great outdoor activity? Why  not take them to the Peterborough Greenwing Fishing Derby on April 29th, 2017. The event is hosted by Ducks Unlimited Canada. Joanne Barbazza, head of outreach and communications for Ducks Unlimited, said the event is “a way to get children to learn the sport of fishing and hopefully start them on the road to making it a lifelong passion.”

Boys and girls 15 years and younger will have the chance to fish for prizes on the 29th. The fish should be biting too! About 5,000 fish will be released into the water before the event starts. Many of the fish will have been tagged for prizes. Participants could win fishing rods, reels, tackle boxes, camping equipment and mountain bikes.

 

Join hundreds of families on the Trent Severn Waterway, just below the Peterborough Lift Lock for all of the fun. “The weather’s looking good and it’s going to be an exciting day,” said event co-chairman Gordon Bowley.

 

Children (and adults) will learn about waterfowl, wildlife and wetland conservations in addition to fishing. And children who register for the derby will automatically become members in Ducks Unlimited’s Greenwing program.  

 

“Greenwing Day” is only open to children 15 years of age and younger on the 29th. Registration is $15 for the first child and $5 for each additional child per family. Fees from children’s registration go toward the Ducks Unlimited Canada’s Greenwing programs involved in conservation awareness. Children must be accompanied by an adult and be wearing a life jacket. Instant prizes for tagged fish will be awarded to registered Greenwing participants from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm only. On-site registration begins at 8:00 am.  Lunch will also be provided to registered Greenwing participants, including a hotdog, drink, cake and ice cream.

“Adult Fishing” is open April 30th 2017 through May 5th 2017 to all registered participants. Adults and youth 16 years and over can register a cost of $15.00 each. All registration costs must be paid in cash on the day of registration.

Enjoy Singing? Check out the Shout Sisters Choir!

If you love to sing but don’t feel you’re quite good enough to be on stage, you might want to check out “Shout Sister!” a unique approach to choral singing.

What makes it unique? No auditions for one thing! Singing with the group is simply fun, including a wide variety of styles from pop to Motown, folk, country and blues.

You don’t even have to be able to read music because members learn from the recorded versions of songs. Experienced singers and inexperienced singers all find a refuge in the relaxed atmosphere, bonding with other sisters.

The choir was started in 2002 by Georgette Fry in Kingston. Georgette’s career spans 35 years. She is a veteran of the Canadian Music scene, a blues and jazz artist and a 1994 Juno nominee.

Georgette fiercely believed that music offers physical and psychological benefits and such benefits should be available to everyone. The development of the choir appealed to a wide range of women who enjoyed singing but who did not have formal training, could not read music, and who definitely did not want to have to audition for a choir. Women who would otherwise be robbed of an opportunity to sing with others suddenly had the chance to belong.

And now, 15 years later, Shout Sister! has 23 chapters across the province with the closest in Peterborough. The photo below is from the local chapter.

The Shout Sister! website includes a large selection of videos where you can see and hear a cross section of the choirs in action. Listen to everything from Hallelujah, Song for a Winter’s Night, Strange Man, Fields of Gold, Have You Ever Seen the Rain…the range of music is amazing.  

Shout Sister! fosters community spirit and giving. Many of the performances help to raise money for local causes, particularly supporting organizations for women and children. They work hard to keep the arts alive by reaching out and inspiring others.

Don’t Miss the ReFrame Film Festival January 26th – 29th

How far would you have to travel to see a film festival with…

  • 59 documentaries from 25 countries, with 28 Canadian films, including 10 by local filmmakers.
  • 2 Oscar-shortlisted documentaries, 22 visiting filmmakers, live performances, community discussions, and several social events and visual displays
  • Performers from Circus Without Borders performing a live acrobatics.
  • Poetry readings, an album release, a performance by Unity, and a benefit for Standing Rock with local indigenous musicians and poets.
  • Discussions focused on homelessness, transgender youth, climate change, and Syria.

…Toronto? Los Angeles? New York?

No, you just have to travel to Peterborough January 26 to 29 to attend the 13th annual ReFrame Film Festival.

ReFrame’s Vision – “To build strong, sustainable, and engaged community audiences for film and art that explore and document issues of human rights and social justice, from the local to the global; to use film and art to provide educational opportunities and encourage activism and thoughtful debate.”

Local films premiering include:

  • Towns End,a documentary about the closing of the Douro General Store,
  • Oshkigmong: A Place Where I Belong, the story of Curve Lake First Nation,
  • Dreams of Electric City, a stop-motion, kaleidoscopic tour of Peterborough.

 

The five feature films require individual tickets. The films highlight a diverse range of topics from the impacts of the cargo shipping industry to an Iranian poetry festival and Mongolia’s first female eagle hunter in a dozen years to the desks of New York Times obituary writers.

Aaju Peter will be the keynote speaker. She is also the subject of Angry Inuk, a feature film which examines the struggle Inuit people face in maintaining their right to hunt seal.

The seal is the lifeblood for Inuit. Celebrity environmentalists have tried to stop the seal hunt but a new generation of Inuit youth are fighting back through social media.

The Eagle Huntress is also a feature film, telling the story of a 13-year-old girl, Aisholpan, who becomes the first girl to train one of the fastest moving animals on earth – an Eagle. You can experience the journey of this young person who is undaunted by the seven foot wingspans and razor sharp talons of the eagle. Stunning cinematography completes the movie.

Daytime passes, providing access to films before 7:30 p.m. are $30 per person, or $20 for students or low-income earners.

Tickets will be sold separately for the five evening films this year to guarantee seating for all ticket holders and reduce line ups. Tickets to evening shows are $10 each for daytime pass holders and $15 for those without a daytime pass.

Peterborough’s Economic Development and Top Employers for 2016

If you are looking for a new job in 2017 it might be worth considering the businesses who employ the most people. I was surprised to learn there are actually 144 employers in Peterborough who employ 40 or more people.

The biggest employer weighs in with 2,410 employees. Not surprising, it’s the Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC).

The PRHC is a state-of-the-art regional hospital with a proud local history, spanning more than a 100 years. The hospital serves a population of 300,000 people in Peterborough and the surrounding region. It has a capacity of 494 beds and has one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Ontario.

The second largest employer is the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board with 1,500 employees from the Peterborough-area schools and the school boards’ head offices.

Tied for third and fourth with 1,163 employees is the City of Peterborough and Trent University.
