Senior pets have many unique challenges: obesity, arthritis, dental disease, cancer, incontinence, cognitive issues, renal disease, heart problems, diabetes, hearing and vision loss – alas, they are some of the same challenges many of us encounter as we age!

Dr. Maser notes, “As dogs are living longer, we are seeing more ailments that we tend to associate with older humans.”  A strong focus on preventive care, an emphasis on dogs as family members, improved nutrition, and spaying and neutering have all contributed to canine longevity.

Cavan Hills hopes Kawartha Lake pet owners will consider them when choosing the best possible care for their pet. They have an informative website (www.cavanhillsvet.com) which provides visitors with a clear sense of their services and offers health care information that will support them in caring for their pets.

If you happen to have a situation that requires emergency veterinary services, you can call local 705-944-5776 or toll free 1-800-501-5967.  You will have the peace of mind knowing Cavan Hills charges no additional fees for emergencies or after hours care. They are there to help!

Call them anytime day or night, 24/7.

Devils Elbow Ski Chalet

The Ski Chalet at Devil’s Elbow.

Bethany is home to one of the finest winter attractions of the Kawarthas – Devil’s Elbow Ski Area, which is just a short drive from Peterborough, Lindsay, Port Hope, Oshawa, and Toronto.

Open through March, it offers an excellent March Break destination for families looking to get out. And with six chairlifts (4 quad and 2 double) ready to whisk you to the top of the hill, lineups aren’t a problem (unlike the airports!)

You don’t have to be an Olympic skier to enjoy the Elbow. It offers a family friendly atmosphere, and with 85 skiable acres, plenty of room and hours of fun for skiers and snowboarders of every experience level. Speed down Satan’s Run or take it easy on the Bunny Hill – with 14 trails there’s something for everyone! The state of the art snowmaking and grooming equipment ensure the best possible conditions every day of the ski season.

The Slopes at Devil's Elbow.

If downhill skiing is not your passion Devil’s Elbow caters to Nordic skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts with 8.5 km of trail winding through a sheltered evergreen and hardwood forest.

You can also visit the Pro Shop for a tune-up of your skis or snowboard. If you’re new to the sport, or looking for an upgrade, the latest equipment and accessories are available for sale.  And of course ski and snowboard rental equipment is available by the day.

All that activity can make you hungry and if you need a bite to eat Devil’s Elbow features “The Grill.” Located in their spacious, two-story day lodge overlooking the ski hills, “The Grill” offers a wide variety of freshly prepared hot and cold foods and beverages. There are few better ways to warm up than with a cup of their delicious hot chocolate or coffee best enjoyed by the stone fireplace!

Devil’s Elbow offers the option of skiing for the full day or 3 hours. They also offer economical season passes, 8-packs of passes, and group discounts.

Just learning the sport? Then join their Ski School for less experienced skiers and snowboarders. Or if you are experienced and looking to get into racing their qualified CSIA instructors teach classes in alpine, snowboard and junior racing.

It may just be the end of January but registration is already open for Saddlewood’s 2015 Summer Camp. Saddlewood is located 3KM north of Bethany Ontario.

Saddlewood

If you have a daughter between the ages of 6 and 18, and she has attended the Equestrian Camp before, than chances are you know you want to register early.

The exceptional riding program has been operating for over 40 years by Janis and Jim Smith. They opened Saddlewood with eight horses – the horses now number over 120.

Saddlewood is a wonderful story of passion and commitment. It was started from a family hobby in 1968. Janis was looking for something for both her and her horses to do in the summer and as a teacher, she was keen to bring her love of horses to the local children.  They opened with just a few horses and today have grown into a full-scale summer camp with over 120 horses, attracting campers from all over Canada, the United States and other parts of the world.

Manitoba

The sense of family is still strong. Janis and Jim’s daughters, both full time teachers, still come to help out during the summertime. There is a feeling of family throughout the camp. Most of the counselors and senior staff have been campers – and the kitchen staff bakes as good as any mom!

The physical premises include 3 outdoor jumping rings, 3 cross country courses, chalet style residences for the campers, a dining hall and a 4,000 square foot activity center – all on hundreds of acres of beautiful land.

It is rare to find a family run business that has maintained their roots for over 40 years – but Saddlewood Equestrian Camp continues to live up to its history and reputation.

During my last, very quick trip to Bethany, we decided to try out the new restaurant that took over for Aunt Dee’s.

Buttertarts n’ More Family Restaurant has been open since April , right in the centre of  town on Hwy 7A.

There are a few changes to the decor such as new chairs and tables, but the most noticeable are the display of jams and pickled beets (and pickled eggs, which I’m not too keen on trying, FYI) and the counter filled with butter tarts!  Yes, there is a BAKE SHOP included in the new restaurant in town!

Both Jeff and I tried the all-day breakfast, which is our usual when stopping in Bethany.  I was happy to see there are Eggs Benedict on the menu and the Hollandaise sauce is really good – thick and creamy without being too rich.  We found the service to be quick and friendly, essential for a small town diner.

buttertartsI don’t have a sweet tooth so the bake shop is really lost on me, but we bought some butter tarts for friends who assured me they were delicious.

Buttertarts n’More have two other locations – one in Little Britain and the other at Hwy 7 at Elm Tree Rd in Oakwood

chalet at Devil's Elbow

chalet at Devil’s Elbow

Last week I posted about Devil’s Elbow Ski and Snowboarding Resort.  Even with the wacky Wednesday weather this week, the runs are still open with wet granular snow but that should change by the end of the day!  Great news because snow is my favourite thing about winter!  Maybe not driving in it, but for me skiing, tobogganing and in general playing in the snow is a lot of fun.

But even when the winter conditions aren’t your cup of tea, there is still lots to do in Bethany.

Aunt Dee's Restaurant

Aunt Dee’s Restaurant in Bethany, Ontario

Any trip to Bethany needs to include a visit to Aunt Dee’s restaurant for their All-Day breakfast!

Going out for breakfast is one of my favourite things to do.  I love restaurants any time of the day, but for me, having someone make me breakfast is really quite decadent!  Especially when it doesn’t have to be first thing in the morning.

We stopped at Aunt Dee’s not too long ago for a huge, plate of eggs, bacon and sausages right in the middle of the day.  It was good, no-nonesense food and there was a lot of it!  There’s nothing fancy on the menu at Aunt Dee’s – the selection ranges from eggs and bacon, to burgers and soup and sandwiches, and it’s all just good food.

But it’s not all about the food at Aunt Dee’s.  Walking into the diner reminded me of Cheers!  It’s the place where everyone knows your name.  We can even say that Aunt Dee’s in Bethany may be the Cheers! of diners.   When we walked in, Jeff immediately found someone he knew inside to talk to!

Walking through the parking lot, we were greeted by an customer who wanted a quick chat about the weather.  You have to remember that while I used to be a small-town girl,  I live in Toronto now – we normally don’t start random conversations with strangers in parking lots, unless one dinged the other’s car and usually when that happens it’s called an argument rather than a conversation.  There was no hostility here – just a pleasant conversation with a Bethany local and that is an excellent example of small-town friendliness!

Inside Aunt Dee’s, there was one empty table and two groups of customers.  Was this a problem?  No, because the table was big enough for all five of us to share!  When does that happen in the city?  We had a lovely chat with the two gentlemen who popped over from their computer shop in nearby Cavan for lunch.

The more time I spend in Bethany, the more I think about growing up in a small town.  There is a comfort level and an overall friendliness that is missing from city life.  And while I still love my life in the city, it’s nice to step outside of it every once in a while and visit such a warm and welcoming community as Bethany, Ontario!

Aunt Dee’s a perfect mix of hearty comfort food with small town friendly flavour.  You can’t miss it – it’s right on Highway 7A in the middle of town, across from the gas station – and it’s worth the drive to Bethany!
